Mark, what I'm proposing is that we are already in decline, the decline is accelerating, and the last viable chance to prevent industrial civilization from going down the same drain as all those other dead civilizations was wasted more than three decades ago. The logic here is very much along the lines of deciding what to do when your ship's sinking: you can get people into lifeboats or you can fling all available efforts into trying to keep the ship afloat, but there isn't time to do both, and so a realistic assessment of the situation is essential -- and if the ship really is going down, any action that doesn't involve life jackets and lifeboats really is a waste of time. - John Michael Greer
